Anas ibn Malik was born in the year 612 AD in Yathrib, which is the present-day Medina. His family converted early to Islam, making his upbringing a lifetime commitment for him. Anas ibn Malik was born of a mother, Umm Sulaym, who defended the cause of Islam at all times and played a significant role in fostering his spiritual and educational development. Anas was subjected to the teachings of Islam at an early age by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When he was so young, Anas was allowed to serve the Prophet as a personal attendant. Anas ibn Malik had done excellent service to Islam. As one of the Prophet Muhammad’s companions, he narrated more than 2,200 Hadiths, which later were included in all significant collections of Hadith literature. Most of his sayings and deeds by the Prophet are first-hand narrations and serve as essential sources for the understanding of Islamic law, theology, and ethics.

Among the most essential aspects that made Anas useful to the people was training and nurturing other scholars. Some of his successful students were leading figures of that era, for instance, Hasan al-Basri and Ibn Sirin, who later proved themselves as great scholars. His zeal for teaching and propagating the Hadith made him a very contributory scholar in transmitting, authentically, the teachings of the Prophet to posterity.
